Method: each point compares a box's current market price (curated Cardmarket offers from professional sellers, or the Cardmarket trend) with its launch MSRP anchor of about €160 for English booster boxes. The multiple answers: what is one euro of MSRP worth today?
The pattern by set age
Key findings
While a set is in print, the price barely moves: boxes younger than a year trade at a median of ×1.2 MSRP — none above ×2.4. Reprints cap the upside; this phase rewards patience, not buying more.
The oldest tracked boxes (4+ years) sit at a median of ×7.8 — every one of them above ×2.1. The step up happens after a set leaves print, not before.
The spread is enormous: Evolving Skies leads at ×13.4 MSRP, while boxes of the same age from less-loved sets sit far lower. The set carries the box — age alone guarantees nothing.
The typical lifecycle curve
- Phase 1 — in print: supply is elastic, reprint waves push the price back toward MSRP. Many boxes even dip below their launch price in the first year.
- Phase 2 — end of print: somewhere between one and two years after release, supply stops growing. Prices leave the MSRP anchor; the inflection typically shows 12–18 months in.
- Phase 3 — out of print: sealed supply only shrinks (boxes get opened), while the set's reputation is settled. The boxes that climb hardest are the ones whose singles the market already loves.
